PROVINCIAL Health Consultant and Talisayan Vice Mayor Rommel Maslog has called on the Provincial Capitol to establish a scholarship program for nursing students to address the province’s nurse shortage.

Maslog emphasized the importance of the scholarship program to tackle future healthcare needs.

“Our nurses are crucial to the provincial health program, which is a priority for Governor Peter Unabia,” Maslog said.

Despite all eight hospitals in Misamis Oriental meeting the Department of Health’s (DOH) nurse-to-patient ratio of 1:12, Maslog highlighted the strain caused by excess patient numbers, which leads to overcrowded hospitals.

Supporting the proposal, Gingoog City Councilor and practicing physician Jerome Magan also stressed the need for more nurses.

He suggested the scholarship program should target underprivileged but dedicated individuals, with a commitment to serve in provincial hospitals for a minimum of five years post-graduation.

Maslog, who benefited from a similar scholarship for his Master’s in Public Management in Hospitals at UP Los Baños, believes the nursing scholarship proposal will likely be implemented under Governor Unabia’s administration, as health is a key focus for the governor.
