LANAO del Norte showcased its rich Maranao heritage during the Sagayan Festival 2024, with Liangan National High School of Nunungan winning the top prize of P500,000.

The festival, held yesterday at the Mindanao Civic Center Stadium in Tubod, celebrated the 65th Araw ng Lanao del Norte.

Governor Imelda Dimaporo emphasized the festival’s significance in preserving Maranao culture, originally conceptualized by her husband, former Governor Abdullah Dimaporo.

The Sagayan Festival features the Maranao war dance, depicting the heroic feats of Prince Bantugan in a dramatic and cultural display.

“The Sagayan reflects how progressive Lanao del Norte is,” said Governor Dimaporo, highlighting the community’s hardworking values.

Tourism Undersecretary Myra Paz Abubakar praised the province for engaging the local community in the tourism sector.

“Cultural celebrations like the Sagayan promote inclusivity and respect for all cultures and religions,” she said, adding that both Muslims and Christians coexist peacefully in the region.

Governor Dimaporo is set to deliver her State of the Province’s Address today, outlining her administration’s accomplishments.

The Sagayan Festival 2024 saw four contingents competing. The winners were:

1st Place: Liangan East National High School – P500,000
2nd Place: Teofila Quibranza National High School – P300,000
3rd Place: Lala Proper Integrated School – P100,000
