THE 1st Philippine Media Safety Summit organizers advanced their mission by hosting the Mindanao leg of the Media Safety Roadshow at New Dawn Hotel Plus on June 29, drawing local media representatives from print and radio.

The roadshow is part of a broader initiative that commenced with the inaugural summit on May 2-3, 2022, which brought together various media organizations pivotal in crafting the 2019 Philippine Plan of Action on the Safety of Journalists (PPASJ), inspired by the United Nations’ framework on journalist safety and impunity issues.

The summit provided a platform for an extensive review and assessment of the current state of journalism and freedom of expression through the PPASJ, addressing the challenges of a rapidly evolving media landscape.

To sustain the momentum, the summit’s convenors have launched a multi-phase, multi-year project aimed at fostering a culture of media safety, particularly in local communities, by promoting the enhanced PPASJ.

Key strategies include a series of roadshow events to disseminate the enhanced PPASJ, as outlined in the Media Safety Summit Declaration, to newsrooms, academic institutions, freedom of expression groups, human rights organizations, and relevant government agencies across Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao.
