PO2 Allan Ablan and PO1 Ronald Sadete said the gunmen shot Ligsanan at pointblank range some 15 meters from his house in Barangay Aklan.

Ligsanan was rushed to a hospital in this city where he was declared dead on arrival by Dr. Gabriel Malvar.

Police have yet to identify any suspect or say what the motive for the killing was.

Mayor Calo however was quick at pointing to the New People’s Army (NPA) as behind the killing.

Calo told  radio station DxBC that Ligsanan used to be a militiaman who was given the military’s “purple heart” award for defending an army detachment in Aklan from the NPA in 1992 .

Calo said the killing was the NPA’s way of getting back at Ligsanan for doing his job.

Police however said they were looking into other possibilities like the killing could have been due to personal reasons.
