REP. Rolando “Klarex” Uy of the city’s 1st District has rejected calls for him to run for mayor of the city next year even as he pledged to be behind the announced reelection bid of Mayor Oscar Moreno.

Uy’s public pronouncement, made before workers and his family’s supporters at the Carmen barangay hall, echoed a similar declaration earlier made by Rep. Rufus Rodriguez of the city’s 2nd District.

Like Rodriguez, Uy said, “I will not leave Mayor Moreno.”

Uy, who nearly succeeded in winning the city’s mayoral post in the 2010 elections, said he has no interest in running for the city’s top post next year.

He then told the crowd of about 400 who gathered at the barangay hall compound to gift him with their promise of support for the likely reelection bid of Moreno in 2016 on July 5, his birthday.

“I am asking you to give me this birthday gift on July 5: your commitment to support the candidacy of Mayor Moreno in 2016,” Uy said.

He said he was aware that many applied but failed to get jobs at city hall despite his recommendation but he explained that the local government cannot provide work for all the unemployed. He said no local government can afford to hire everyone.

Uy said he was committed at strengthening his political ties and partnership with the Moreno administration so they could continue working to improve services in the city.

“Go to the outlying barangays in the 1st District and you will see the many projects that resulted from our tandem. All the development that we are seeing never happened before because of too much partisan politics,” he said.

He said his mind was made up that he would not seek the mayorship despite being prodded by some groups.

Uy also said he was aware that there were attempts to make him or Rep. Rodriguez run for mayor as a divide-andule tactic in order to boost the winning chances of a potential third candidate. He said he would not bite the bait.

Uy told the Carmen crowd: “I am telling you this first: I am not running for mayor. And if I am asked to speak in Divisoria during the fiesta, I will tell the entire city: ‘No, I will not run for mayor in 2016.’”
