Mario Goya, a government weather specialist based in  Molugan, El Salvador, Misamis Oriental, said easterly waves, and not a low pressure area or a storm, caused yesterday’s rains across Mindanao.

Yesterday’s weather brought some relief to people, especially to those who visited to cemeteries in time for All Soul’s Day, a day after the temperature in Cagayan de Oro and Misamis Oriental rose, and was aggravated by the humidity.

Goya said Sunday’s temperature here reached 32.2 degrees Celsius, and stayed nearly the same from 2 pm to 8 pm.

He attributed the Sunday heat to the warm ocean waters brought by the El Niño phenomenon.

Goya said the easterly waves brought the rains yesterday but the effects of El Niño would persist.

“Wala man magpasabot nga kon na-ay El Niño, wala nay ulan. Na-a gihapoy ulan pero hinay kaayo, ug dili  gyud supisinte nga makapabuhi sa mga tanom,” he said.
