REP. Rufus Rodriguez of the city’s 2nd District is considered part of the administration group behind the presidential bid of former Interior secretary Manuel Roxas II but Mayor Oscar Moreno is the Liberal Party’s official candidate, Sen. Ralph Recto told reporters here over the weekend.

Recto, who is seeking a Senate seat again, told a news conference that in the end, it will be Cagayanons who would decide who their leader would be.

“My understanding is that the LP’s candidate for mayor here in Cagayan de Oro is Mayor Oca. But I also understand that Rufus is also a part of the administration,” he said.

Recto came over to grace the grand reunion of the group Karancho, and to receive its endorsement for his reelection bid.

The Karancho affair was also graced by senators Grace Poe and Francis Escudero who have teamed up in a bid for the presidential and vice presidential seats, respectively. They were accompanied by members of their ticket: Reps.  Neri Colmenares of Bayan Muna, Sherwin Gatchalian of Valenzuela,  and Manila Vice Mayor Francisco Moreno Domagoso.

Poe said she and her group would be relying on private groups, mostly composed of non-politicians, in their campaign to win votes in Cagayan de Oro.

“We have friends from the private sector. Some of them have not come out in the open yet, and I don’t want to brag about who I have talked to knowing that they come from different political parties,” said Poe. “Huwag na lang ninyo akong pilitin na sabihin kung sino pero kaibigan pa rin sila ni mayor.”
