THE Department of Health (DOH) has assured that the country is Zika virus-free but its called on citizens to do their “shared responsibility” in keeping it that way.

“It’s a shared responsibility–it is our responsibility to make sure that mosquitoes do not propagate and can increase in number,” said DOH spokesperson Dr. Lyndon Lee Suy.

Lee Suy said reducing the population of mosquitoes was an effective preparation to the possible entry of Zika virus, which is currently spreading in Latin America.

“If the population of mosquitoes is low, the risk will be smaller,” Lee Suy said.

In terms of how that “shared responsibility” can be done, the Health spokesperson said the first step was to ensure that everyone would check their environment and get rid of potential breeding sites of mosquitoes.

He said the Aedes mosquitoes that carried the Zika virus in the countries where it was reported, were also in the country, and these could become “agents” in spreading the source.

In 2012, the DOH confirmed that it had recorded a 15-year old male who was infected by Zika virus in Cebu.
