The failure of elections in the town of Binidayan and three villages in Tamparan municipality is delaying the canvassing of votes, and might push back the proclamation of winning candidates in the province.

Provincial prosecutor Bashary Mapupuno, vice chairman of the provincial board of canvassers, said special elections have been scheduled in Binidayan and Tamparan today.

The absence of signal for the network device Broadband Global Area Network (BGAN) is the main cause why three villages in the municipality Tamparan.

“If there are no other glitches, right after the special elections, hopefully, we will proclaim the winning candidates for governor, vice governor and board members,” Mapupuno said.

Meanwhile, the PBOC and poll watchers from different parties are still waiting for the election returns from eight municipalities, including Marawi city.

During the start of canvassing, some poll watchers and lawyers sent by different candidates could not help but question why other polling precincts were not able to transmit election returns within the given time frame.

The opposing parties also cited the delay of transmission of election results from Marawi considering that all polling precincts have functioned well during the election.

Mapupuno explained that they were still waiting for the city board of canvassers in Marawi to conclude the proceedings and transmit the results of election.

As of Thursday 5 pm, results from Marawi precincts have yet to be transmitted.

Mapupuno said he was hoping that once Marawi transmits the election returns, winning candidates would be identified.

Marawi has more than sixty thousand votes contributing to the province’s 484,435 total voting population.

Mapupuno said the 2016 election in the province was generally peaceful despite “minor glitches.”
