The children and their families have remained at the Surigao del Sur Provincial Sports Complex in Tandag which they turned into their “home” last year after they were forced to evacuate because of the killings.

Alternative Learning Center for Agricultural and Livelihood Development (Alcadev) school director Maricris Pagaran and Tribal Filipino Program of Surigao del Sur (Trifpss) leader cum teacher Rosemarie Saytona said they have built five makeshift classrooms for the 395 school children of lumad families.

The children are among some 3,000 evacuees from Sitio Han-ayan, Barangay Diatagon in Lianga town, Surigao del Sur who fled their homes after the brutal killings of tribal cheftains Dionel Campos and Bello Sinzo, and Alcadev school director Emerito Samarca last year allegedly by militiamen from the Magahat/Bagani group. Many of the evacuees opted to stay at the sports complex. The Magahat group was also linked to the August 2015 killing of brothers Crisanto and Ely Tagobol in Barangay Siagao, San Miguel, Agusan del Sur.

Pagaran and Saytona said they would follow the Alternative Learning System curriculum of the Department of Education (Deped) for elementary graders while Trifpss would handle the high school program.
