IT is sad to note that what is happening in our country today is getting worst. Crimes have been committed and the death rate is increasing.

As part of the culture in this country, it is really disturbing to live in the area where dreadful crimes are committed. We can’t sense a better future when we are greatly troubled. How can such things be put to an end?

I am a resident of Davao. I am glad to live here and I am enjoying its harmony. This is where I see people are disciplined athough not all, but most of us are. I must say I am lucky, to have lived in a city like this and to have experienced living on the loose. I enjoyed the privilege to be assured of our safety wherever we go in the city.

But I also pity those whose safety even in the confines of their residences are at stake and cannot be assured of. I feel sad for those who are living in fear and the presence of lawless elements is imminent, where the elements of New Peoples’ Army are camping.

I have read this: “Top NPA leader arrested in Compostela Valley.” According to the news, he is the 19th most wanted in Pantukan, responsible for the murder of several civilians and soldiers, the destruction of properties and extorting money from civilians and business establishments in the area. This may seem a triumph on the part of government but still scary to those who lives in the area where this NPA leader’s group operates.

I just realized this is may be the reason why development is so rare in the area and why poverty still strikes the most imminent problem of the people living in the province. The NPA’s adherence to communism makes us believe that they will end the suffering of the people and put an end to the problem of poverty. But their cause resulted in more oppressed and poverty-stricken Filipinos. Why? Because they bar the government from coming in the rural areas. They have prevented development and help to get through the doors of the residents of the communities. In believing themselves as heroes of the masses, they have turned the people who believed in them pitiful.

Should we still believe in them? Or should we help the government stop them?

President Duterte is right in saying, ammunitions are expensive and instead of buying those, why won’t NPA leaders just surrender and go back to the folds of law so they could truly extend assistance to the people they have long wanted to help. –Lyka Magandia, lykamagandia2016@ gmail.com
