Cagayan de Oro City legislators are determined to monitor the implementation of roads and bridges in the city to ensure the protection of the public.

During its regular session, the City Council, headed by Vice Mayor Rainier Joaquin Uy, adopted Resolution No. 12560-2017, requesting the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH 10) to furnish the City Council of Cagayan de Oro with a copy of the design criteria or manual in the construction of roads and bridges in the city.

This is in response to the special report of Councilor Edna M. Dahino, who aired the concern of the public regarding the safety and worthiness of the overpass connecting two downtown malls in the city.

The lady councilor cited that the overpass is not wide enough to accommodate a high density of users and is not user-friendly, especially to the elderly and persons with disabilities and other safety concerns.

Legislators, likewise, expressed concern over billboards installed in overpasses within the city, which pose health hazards and safety threats to the public.

The hard copy of the design manual in the construction of roads and bridges, including pedestrian overpasses will be used by the City Council for its reference as it continues to monitor and secure the public in the implementation of projects in the city.

According to the legislative body, the city has the capability and good track record when it comes to maintaining projects funded by the national government and foreign grants and protecting and securing the equipment, materials, workers and agency officials during the implementation period.

The report was also referred to the committees on public works, on social services, and on police, fire and public safety, chaired by Councilors Zaldy Ocon, Reuben Daba, and Romeo Calizo, respectively for study. (sp)
