The Committee on Social Services will summon the Office of the City Building Officials (OBO) to shed light if their office is checking the integrity of buildings should a high-magnitude earthquake hit the city.

Committee chair Reuben Daba said he wanted OBO to identify, before the committee, buildings in the city that would face major damage should an earthquake occur in the city.

Daba’s call was made after officials from the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs 10) said an earthquake like the magnitude 6.7 earthquake in Surigao City would likely happen in the city.

Atong gipatawag ang OBO sa atong komitiba aron sila mismo ang mosulti kanato unsa nga building karon sa dakbayan ang nag-atubang sa kakuyaw kung dunay kusog nga linog,” he said.

Daba added they will also review existing ordinances which tasks OBO in conducting annual assessment of existing buildings that have been erected in the past 20 years and older.

He said OBO should do an immediate and ocular assessment on the old City Hall building so that recommendation for major repairs could be made.

“It cannot be denied that City Hall alone would also be considered as among the old buildings in the city. Apil ani ang mga tulay ug mga barangay infrastructure projects like barangay hall and health centers,” Daba pointed out.

Earlier, Phivolcs-Northern Mindanao Regional Director Marcial Labininay issued a warning that the region has four active faults, namely: Tagoloan River Fault, Cabanglasan Fault in Balingasag town, the fault line in Alubijid town, and Central Mindanao Fault–– which is the most active and longest fault line in the region that stretches from Gingoog City to Malaybalay City in Bukidnon.
