UKC Builders has promised to provide a detour even after it repaired the damaged section of its Igpit bridge project in Opol, Misamis Oriental, and re-opened it for public use on Wednesday afternoon.

This was revealed on Thursday by Land Transportation Office (LTO) regional director Oscar Salcedo, quoting UKC’s project engineer, Kenneth Joy Fabrea, as telling him.

Salcedo said the traffic jams caused by the collapse of the section of the ongoing bridge project prompted UKC to decide on providing a diversion road.

Salcedo however said the plan would require negotiations with at least two families who own properties in Opol that would be affected by the planned detour.

He said the proposed detour is just near the Igpit bridge project.

“Na-a may alternative  road from Poblacion, Opol going to Barangay  Malanang, then puede mogawas sa Barangay San Simon, Cagayan de Oro pero dili man maayo ang dalan ug medyo layo. Ang igasto sa pag-ayo sa  dalan going to Malanang,  ma-o nalang ang gastohon paghimog   diversion  road diha du-ol sa bridge construction,” Salcedo said.

Meanwhile, Cagayan de Oro Councilor George Goking said the way the Opol bridge project and what happened early this week were like economic sabotage.

Goking, chairman  of the city council’s trade and commerce committee, said many businessmen complained and called him up to complain about the inconveniences and damages resulting from the collapse of a section of the ongoing bridge project.

He proposed that the matter be collectively looked into by the Philippine Councilors’ League in Region 10, pointing out that what happened on Tuesday and Wednesday in Opol had damaging effects to the region.

Goking said he would bring the matter to the attention of PCL regional president Owen Garcia of Valencia City in Bukidnon.

He said UKC and Department of Public Works and Highways regional director Evelyn Barroso should be summoned and made to explain.

“Dapat monubag ang UKC ug DPWH   kay dili lang taga Misamis Oriental  ug taga Cagayan de Oro ang naperehisyo sa ilang bridge construction. Apil na ang katawhan  sa entire region labi na kadtong taga Bukidnon nga mosakay sa eroplano sa Laguindingan airport,   nabalda sila,” Goking said.

Unless UKC gave a good explanation, he said, the PCL could opt to bring the matter to the attention of Malacanang so it could seek the cancellation of the construction firm’s license.

Goking said the PCL in the region could also seek the immediate ouster of Director Barroso.
