THE Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) announced that the ongoing Igpit bridge widening project in Opol town, Misamis Oriental, would be completed this month.

The bridge construction, with a net length of 45 linear meters, is expected to be finished earlier as scheduled “if no untoward incident will occur during the implementation of the project.”

In a report, the Philippine Information Agency (PIA) quoted UKC Builders Inc., the project contractor, as saying that the completion date target is June 22, 2017, and the firm “will make every effort for the bridge to get done.”

PIA reported that the bridge project is 79 percent completed as of this writing.

Early this month, the UKC project caused monstrous traffic jams in western areas of the city all the way to El Salvador City in Misamis Oriental.

It was due to the collapse of a temporary retaining wall which is part of the ongoing Igpit bridge construction.

The collapse of the approximately 12 linear meter retaining wall was blamed on the water saturation of the base soil that supported the  structure.

Another bridge project, the 40-linear meter Opol Bridge is 75-percent completed, and is expected to be completed next month ahead of the June 21, 2017 target of completion.

In another development, congressmen and the DPWH regional office led the inspection of the “Western and Eastern Nautical Highway” from March 17 to March 27 to ensure that the major roads address the traffic congestion.

Spearheaded by Speaker Pantaleon Alvarez, the team included House majority floor leader Rodolfo Fariñas, Rep. Celso Lobregat, Rep. Cesar Sarmiento and other congressmen.

The team was welcomed by DPWH acting regional director Virgilio Eduarte towards their entry to Region 10 along Aurora, Zamboanga road boundary. Key officials from the DPWH regional office joined the representatives as they traversed from west to east of the nautical highway along Butuan-Cagayan-Iligan Road, Puerto then along Sayre Highway.

The inspection in northern Mindanao was conducted from March 21 to March 22.

The representatives expressed their appreciation to the implementers of the road construction since the major roads in Region 10 are clean and widened lanes are considered.

The Philippine Nautical Highway System is a system of roads and ports developed by the government to connect the major islands of Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao. It is also called as the Road Roll-on/Roll-off Terminal System (RRTS) or simply the RoRo System. (pia)
