Sultan Hamidullah Atar of Marawi City in a meeting with reporters together with about 30 sultans and representatives of the Sultanate and Imams of Lanao said they condemn acts of terrorism.

“Somehow we could have influenced with this radical people, however our voices were never recognized by the government to negotiate with them,” the letter reads in part.

Atar said they are confident the traditional Maranao way of talking will be more successful in convincing the terrorists to leave Marawi so the evacuees can return to the city.

The open letter was signed by Sultan Abdul Hamidullah Atar of Marawi, Sultan Sanny Masnar, Secretary General, the 16 Royal Sultanates of Lanao, Sultan Salic Tago, Sultan Manaros Banocag of Ditsaan, among others.
