POLICE City Director Senior Supt. Robert Roy Bahian has released yesterday a suspect who claimed to have links with the Maute Group after finding out the suspect is “mentally ill.”

Bahian identified the freed suspect as Roneje Suson Villanueva, 29, and a resident of Barangay Bibilik, Dumalinao, Zamboanga del Sur.

A certain Editha Villanueva, who also hails from Barangay Bibilik, confirmed the identity of the suspect.

Editha also confirmed that her nephew is mentally ill.

Villanueva told authorities his name was Jerusalem Agbu Roneje when he was first asked by the police.

Chief Insp. Ariel Philip Pontillas said Villanueva, from his hometown, first went to Pagadian City before coming to this city.

On June 28, at around 7 am, the Cogon Police Station respondent to a call for assistance from a resident of Barangay 31 who reported seeing a man sleeping in their barangay chapel who resembled the face of Maute Group suspect Mohammad Mulok.

Chief Insp. Mardy Hortillosa, Cocpo spokesman, said Villanueva reportedly admitted to authorities that he the same person in the picture gallery of Maute Group suspects.

Hortillosa added they further confirmed that Villanueva was not suspected Maute Group member Mulok when they verified with the military intelligence agency.

“This is the reason why we detained him,” said Hortillosa.

Hortillosa said they are arranging to turn over Villanueva to his family.
