THE leader of the Philippine Councilors’ League has thrown its support behind President Duterte’s proposal to postpone the barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan elections, citing the ongoing raging Marawi crisis as a pretext.

“Karon nga duna kita’y problema sa Marawi and other insurgencies in Visayas and Luzon areas, dili pa gyud pwede nga duna kita’y election. This will worsen in other areas,” PCL national chairman Danilo Dayanghirang told his colleagues at a conference here on Friday.

Dayanghirang said holding an election is “not timely.” But he said the PCL has yet to come up with an official position on the matter.

Dayanghirang said elections would divide the attention of the people between fighting drugs and terrorism.

“Therefore, it must be deferred for now to pave way for much (more) important matters,” he said.

The League, he said, is promoting peace through sports by visiting all key cities and provinces in Mindanao.

“Tanan kini atong libuton apil ang uban nga mga PCL chapters. Initially, we organized Mindanao wide basketball tournaments para gyud makita sa uban kung unsa gayud ang kahimtang sa atong palibot,” he said.
