The committee on social services here has reminded owners of establishments to always provide a vacant area for persons with disability in parking spaces and to avoid blocking their path.

This was raised by the Councilor Reuben Daba, chair of the committee, during his committee meeting with different stakeholders, in relation to the resolution creating a Technical Working Group for the implementation of the Accessibility Law in the city.

The committee created a TWG to look into the compliance of Batas Pambansa (BP) 344, “An act to enhance the mobility of disabled persons by requiring certain buildings, institutions, establishments and public utilities.”

During the meeting, a representative of Department of Tourism said establishments are required to provide disabled persons with parking spaces.

She said establishments are also required to provide ramps and doors of guest rooms should be extra big and 37-inches wide.

The bathroom should have a sliding door with no division on the floor so that disabled persons can easily go straight to the shower area, she added.

For her part, Councilor Maria Lourdes Gaane, vice-chair of the committee, said if the TWG will be functional, monitoring will be the next step in implementing the accessibility law. (sp)
