WITH the resignation of Chairman Andres Bautista from the Commission on Elections, will the issue of computer cheating in the 2010 and 2016 elections no longer to be looked into? I am hoping that, even with Bautista’s stepping down from his position, investigations on computer cheating in Philippine elections would still be carried out or pursued in earnest.

The truth is, there is a need to really determine whether these accusations of cheating in the elections are true or not, not only because there is still an electoral contest that is ongoing as of now regarding the vice presidency in the 2016 elections, but more because Filipinos should now decide whether they still would want to continue using computers in their elections in the days to come.

It is a fact that when elections are fair and honest, those whom the people have chosen to serve them will be the ones who will serve with sincerity. In those cases, those who won fair and square can be expected to discharge their duties quite well. If the results of an election were rigged, those who cheated cannot be expected to be true to their responsibilities. Instead, they are sure to steal and plunder, so they will have the means to cheat again next time.

From the Facebook account of Cebu accountant Danilo Pacana, here is an interesting piece of information: “This month, I will provide President Duterte and BIR (Bureau of Internal Revenue) Commissioner (Cesar) Dulay the supporting documents on the P1.2-trillion tax evasion case of Lucio Tan’s flagship companies, Fortune Tobacco/Philip Morris and Asia Brewery.

“(This tax evasion case was) hidden by former BIR Comm. (Kim) Henares from the entire nation. Its the people who own this much needed money for the country. The success of my 30 year crusade against big time corruption, economic sabotage and injustice to our beloved country, rests on the political will of the president and people’s strong support. Mine is just a tiny voice in the wilderness!”

If Pacana’s allegations are true, this is the best time for him to really pursue Lucio Tan and make him answerable. Pacana should likewise endeavor to do something to make Henares share, if ever, in the responsibility over this case. I really couldn’t imagine how she was so rabidly pursuing cases against people who were opposing her patron then, and yet letting some favored persons or groups literally go scot-free.

I am sure you have also been shocked with the news that roaring and unrelenting fire killed 17 people from Northern California, US, especially in the region that is famous for producing red wine–the counties of Napa Valley, Sonoma, and Mendocino. At about the same time, fire also destroyed several wine factories and residential structures in the area.

The cause of the fire is still being investigated but I perceive only one thing from what is happening. These kinds of calamities were predicted to happen a long time ago yet. We were told, whether we believe or not, that the time will come that we will go through scorching heat–or the heat that burns and destroys and kills.

We were also told that there will be a shift in climates around the world–so that the sky above us will be on fire, and the earth on which we are walking through would become as hard as iron. According to Deuteronomy 28 of the Bible, there are two reasons why these are happening: we are no longer listening to, and we are no longer obeying, God’s commands. Oh well…
