TASK Force Hapsay Dalan chairman Jose Edgardo Uy over the weekend blamed the lack of road discipline of many drivers in the city for most of the nearly 2,000 traffic accidents recorded by the police in the city during the first 10 months of the year.

But Uy said there were other factors such as the increase in the number of vehicles in the city.

“The roadworthiness of motor vehicles is also a factor aside from human error,” Uy said.

Uy said this after the Cagayan de Oro City Police Office revealed that there were more traffic accidents than crimes committed in the city from January to October.

During the period, police recorded 1,840 traffic accidents in the city.

Data released by Chief Insp. Mardy Hortillosa II, the city police’s spokesman, showed the cases of traffic accidents were 130 more than the number of “crimes against property” that topped the list of criminal cases in the city. Such crimes include robbery, theft, carnapping or vehicle theft, and cattle rustling. There were 1,710 cases of “crimes against property” during the 10-month period.

Land Transportation Office regional director Oscar Salcedo said he was unaware of the number of traffic accidents recorded by the police in the city.

“If ever nag-increase ang accidents of motor  vehicles on the  road,  one of the reasons could be the road construction projects, less traffic signs, increase in the  allowable load limits,  drivers’ lack of driving  knowledge, owners’ lack of maintenance of their units, etc.,” Salcedo said.

LTO, he said, has no been keeping track of the number of accidents in the city because it was focused on more attention to the apprehension of traffic violations. (nitz arancon)
