THE cloudy skies and the downpours experienced in the city and elsewhere in the region yesterday were not due to the low pressure area that entered Philippine territory at 3 am yesterday.

The Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration said the weather system was already 425 km east of Guian in eastern Samar as of 3 pm yesterday and it continued to move eastward.

Jose Frivaldo, a weather specialist at the Pagasa station in El Salvador, Misamis Oriental, said  he doubted if the LPA would intensify into a storm but if it does, it would be called “Basyang.”

He said the rains experienced in this part of the country yesterday were caused by “localized thunderstorms” or due to the thick dark clouds that have nothing to do with the LPA.

Frivaldo said Pagasa is monitoring another potential threat, a cloud formation over the Pacific Ocean off Palau. He said it was tracking towards eastern Mindanao. (nitz arancon)
