POLICE yesterday released a mugshot of one of the suspected gunmen in the Dec. 2, 2017 shooting death of Dr. Ricardo Rotoras even as authorities elevated architect Rey Galua in their list of “persons of interest” in the investigation into the murder of the University of Science and Technology of Southern Philippines president.

The blurry photo of the suspect, Johnreal Gamanay, was pasted on a PDF document of a news release posted by Cagayan de Oro City Police Office spokesman Chief Insp. Mardy Hortillosa on the chat group of Camp Alagar’s PRO-10 News Update Facebook page.

Gamanay a.k.a. Junrell Gamanay, Alejandro Ceniza and Jun Putot, was arrested by the police in Makati in Jan. 13 based on a warrant issued by a court in Misamis Occidental in connection with the killing of a politician there.

During interrogation, police said, the suspect spoke of being behind a recent “hit” in Cagayan de Oro, prompting them to bring him here so he could be shown to witnesses. Police claimed Gamanay was identified by witnesses in Jan. 17 before he and another suspect were brought to Ozamiz City where they are presently detained.

Police and Rotoras’s wife pressed murder charges against Gamanay here this week.

Meanwhile, Hortillosa said Architect Galua, a respondent in two illegal arms and explosives possession cases, is now considered by the Special Investigation Task Group on the Rotoras case as a “prime person of interest”.

Hortillosa said Galua is not considered a suspect but of the four persons of interest in the Rotoras case investigation, the architect is now on the top of the list.

Galua, a former subordinate of Dr. Rotoras in the USTP, was arrested when police found a cache of guns and grenades during a raid in his uptown Cagayan de Oro home in Jan. 9 based on a search warrant issued by a Gingoog-based court. Since his arrest, Galua has never spent a night in a detention cell because of a heart ailment that allegedly required hospital confinement.
