GINGOOG City — Mayor Marie Guingona has accepted the designation of Chief Insp. Ariel Philip Pontillas as the city’s new police director despite her mother’s questions.

John Ladaga, assistant city administrator, said the mayor welcomed Pontillas’s designation and even pledged to continue supporting the city police office under its new leadership in Feb. 9.

The mayor’s mother Ruthie, a former governor and now vice mayor of the city, has raised questions about Pontillas’s assignment from the Cagayan de Oro City Police Office where he served as intelligence chief to the Gingoog police.

Pontillas replaced Supt. Roel Lami-ing, who is holding a rank higher than his, in Feb. 5.

“Sayang man si Supt. Lami-ing, maayo man ang performance,” said Vice Mayor Guingona.

She brought the matter to the attention of Misamis Oriental Gov. Yevgeny Vicente Emano during a recent meeting here.

Without eleborating, Emano merely replied: “Siguro martial law karon.”

Emano however assured that the capitol would continue to support the Gingoog City Police Office under Pontillas, and the Misamis Oriental Provincial Police Office.

Pontillas, for his part, said he was merely following the orders from his superiors.

“Igo ra pud ko ga-follow sa order,” he explained to the elder Guingona.
