How to Encourage the Younger Generation to Join Your Family Reunion

In the past 12 months or so, my relatives and I have been working hard to make sure that the 4^th installment of our Neri-Chaves Grand Reunion will be a success. It’s been a rollercoaster ride for all of us, especially since our clan is B-I-G one. So far, we’ve been able to encourage relatives who live far from the country to come home and join our celebration. There are others, however, who are still undecided.

A large number of this undecided group belongs to the younger generation. This is no surprise to us because we expected it. For one reason or another, many of them find family reunions boring. But why? Family reunions are for everyone!

They’re an opportunity to get to know relatives better. Your aunts, uncles, cousins, nephews, and nieces all deserve to enjoy a portion of your time – a chance to establish a connection with you. Family reunions are all about family. What about that does the younger generation not like?

The Importance of Family Reunions

Family reunions are intended to increase interaction between clan members. This is important because today’s generation is too caught up with technology. There are very few opportunities for an honest to goodness conversation. Nowadays, people get in touch via text messages or through Facebook. There is now very little human connection. Joining a family reunion will help you realize the value of interaction and communication.

Family reunions are a means to check, verify, update, and preserve your clan’s heritage. Wouldn’t it be exciting to know who your great grandparents are? Wouldn’t you want to know how many of your relatives are achievers and important members of society? Doesn’t tracing your family roots sound exciting for you?

What We’re Doing to Entice the Youth to Join Our Reunion

So how do we plan to encourage the youth to join our upcoming grand reunion? Simple; we created activities for them. We’re not allowing our frustrations get the best of us. Instead, we used these to create fun ideas for everyone, including the younger generation.

Since family reunions are also about having fun and making good memories with relatives, we decided to hold games that everybody can participate in. Instead of coming up with around three to five games with different participants, we decided that an Amazing Race/Survivor type of activity will be the answer to all our dilemma. Everybody can play – regardless of age – because a variety of games will be happening simultaneously. So the younger crowd will no longer have a reason to say, “This is boring!”

In addition to this, we also decided to create a separate evening activity for them. Since rave parties are all the rage nowadays, we are making one for our young clan members. So instead of pouting and complaining about having to dance to “old music” with “DIs” (dance instructors), they can enjoy dancing the night away with their own brand of music and entertainment.

Also, we’re encouraging them to showcase their talent – and we’re giving away prizes to the ones who will give the best performance. So they’re not just going to go onstage and perform, they’ll also get a reward for it. We’re pretty sure that’s something that will excite not just the young generation, but everyone!

These are just some of the ideas we came up with to make our reunion interesting and enticing for our younger clan members. We’re keeping our fingers crossed and praying that everything will be a success. If you’re currently planning a reunion or get-together of your own, maybe you’d like to try our ideas, too?
