AFTER series of discussions, the City Council committee on health and sanitation and health insurance chaired by Councilor Maria Lourdes Gaane adopted a resolution recommending to City Mayor Oscar Moreno the issuance of a temporary closure of the operation of a business establishment in Barangay Cugman, subject to its compliance with R.A. 8749, or the Clean Air Act.

This is in view of the complaint regarding air pollution caused by the sawdust produced from wood products in the area, which affects students of Cugman National High School and nearby residents.

Earlier, Gaane requested the Barangay Council of Cugman to look into the matter and to verify if the establishment has already complied with requirements.

During the meeting, a representative of the barangay council informed the committee that some improvements were observed since the owner of the establishment has installed air pollution control device in the factory.

“Wala na’y buga nga itum… ang problem is molusot pero dili na grabe,” he said.

A representative of Cugman National High School said the problem has not been totally resolved since until now they still suffer health problems because of the sawdust and air pollution.

Dr. Fe Bongcas of the City Health Office, proposed the temporary suspension of its operation because the problem was not totally eradicated. “While they are still complying with those complaints we will suspend para madali,” she said.

Rev. Prudencio Plaza, representative of the company, agreed to temporarily close the operation.

Gaane said she believes that the company will find solutions to fix the problem.

“Let’s compromise para dili sad maapektohan ang atong mga teachers ug studyante ug ang mga residente,” she said. (CLI)
