WHILE surfing the net, I came across an article on positiveoutlooksblog.com captioned, “Studies reveal why good employees quit – and it’s not always about the money.”  The article discusses that while most of us need stable sources of income, there are still good employees that quit.

When good employees decide to leave the company, some people immediately assume that the need for a bigger pay is the main reason.

The article revealed that a study conducted of American employees last year found out that 75 percent of 1,000 employees said that their immediate boss was the “worst part of their job.”  The study also reveals that 65 percent of the good employees who responded to the survey even “prefer their bosses being replaced rather than getting an increase in their salary.”

Aside from the boss as the culprit of good employee exodus, being overworked is one of the top reasons even the best employees leave their jobs.  Reality check – more and more assignments are dumped on good performers because the normally deliver desired results.  The outcome?  Burn out.

Lack of appreciation is one reason good employees leave their jobs.  Sometimes a simple “Great job!” or “Good job!” will do.  There are surely small things that make employees feel more valued.  The article continues, “Raises and bonuses are good, yes, but giving a salary increase or monetary rewards aren’t the only ways to show recognition or appreciation.

Lack of challenge on the job also results in employee leaving their job.  An employee who has been with the company for a long time doing the same tasks every day could lose interest because the work becomes monotonous.  Engaging the employees in other type of work in the organization can redeem their interest and help them learn new skills, too, the blog continues.

Office politics, one of the reasons even the best employees leave, can result in the wrong people getting promoted, and that alone may prompt good employees to leave. Watching the employees carefully and monitoring their contributions to the organization will help in making the right decisions especially in critical matters like promotions.

This is also one reason the bad eggs in the organization flourish if the head of office does not know how to do his job of managing the organization.  Instead, that kind of organization head depends heavily on gossip initiated by those that are close to him – relatives, favored ones, and the like.

To perpetuate the “old boys club,” the head of office often discards the best employees hence most of those who are made to stay are the “yes, sir” ones.  This results in the best employees are made to leave, to be blunt about it.
