FARMERS in northern Mindanao have been reeling on the effects of the El Niño phenomenon but the Department of Agriculture (DA) here still could not give an estimate of the extent of the damage in Region 10.
Grace Santa Elena, DA-10 public information officer, however, gave an estimate of the extent of damage to crops in Misamis Oriental which now stands at P62,030,382.
She said the worst hit areas in Misamis Oriental include Magsaysay, Lugait, El Salvador City, and Gingoog City.
Provincial agriculturist Concepcion Salcedo said the dry spell has affected some 2,534 farmers, and 1,854 hectares of farmland in the province.
But Santa Elena said Salcedo’s report is still subject to validation and verification.
In Bukidnon, Gov. Jose Ma. Zubiri asked DA for assistance as his province has been adversely affected by the dry spell.
Zubiri asked for cloud seeding operations over Bukidnon.
But Santa Elena said, “Dili mahimo nga mag-cloud seeding kita nga walay supporting resolution gikan sa Sangguniang Panlalawigan kay mao man kana ang usa sa requirement sa national government.”
DA regional director Lealyn Ramos said the dry spell has affected 31,750 hectares planted with corn, and 1,705 hectares of cassava farms in 22 towns of Bukidnon.
