The discussions at the Balanghai Hotel and Convention Center would focus of the Philippine’s first Easter Sunday Mass in the country which Butuan has asserted to have taken place in the city, said Dr. Potenciano Malvar, chair of the Butuan-Agusan Historical Society and the Butuan City History and Tourism Council.

The controversy has remained unresolved to this day. While Butuanons insist the first mass was officiated at Masao, this, many have maintained that it took place in Limasawa, Southern Leyte.

Officially, the government recognizes Limasawa, and called it “the birth of Christianity” in the Philippines.
