THE Solidarity of Transport Alliance in Northern Mindanao-Pinagkaisang Samahan ng mga Tsuper at Operator Nationwide is now having second thoughts about staging a two-day public transportation sector strike next week.

Ringo Lago, Starex-Piston secretary general, said there has been a change in the plans of the national leadership of Piston leaders, and members of his group would hold a meeting.

Lago earlier announced the Starex-Piston would take part in what is supposed to be a nationwide strike on Monday and Tuesday.

He said he and other members of the group would need to meet and agree on a plan of action.

Another public transport group, the National  Confederation of  Transport  Unions here, earlier said it won’t participate in the Starex-Piston’s planned strike because it held a different position on the Duterte administration’s public transportation modernization plan. NCTU said what is at stake is its application for registration as a public transport cooperative.

Starex-Piston is strongly opposed to the modernization program which it sees is another way of phasing out public jeepneys that are 15 years and older. Based on the program, Lago said, jeepneys would need to upgrade to expensive Euro 4 engines.

Instead of a “phaseout,” Lago said, government should go for a rehabilitation program. (hussein macatoro)
