THE tragic incident that befell Cagayan de Oro City Police Office City Director Nelson Aganon during a proficiency training for motorcycle riders is disturbing considering that the City of Cagayan de Oro has temporarily lost an able police city director.

As news about the tragic incident broke out, I could not help it but recall my impression about the man when I first met him in his office barely a couple of months ago. I did not know him personally. I went to see him in his office about matters related to RCB (Regulatory and Complaint Board) operations.

My first impression of the man was his approachability and openness. He listened to what we brought up and after a considerable discussion, he agreed to what we proposed and requested. He exuded an aura of a true leader – one who listens.

The tragic incident may have been avoided had Col. Aganon not tried the motorcycle jump. But to my mind, I believe he did that to show his subordinates in the police office what a true leader should be. One cannot be an effective leader if he merely sits back and relaxes while his team sweats it out.

I hope you well, Col. Aganon, Sir!

Mayor Oscar Moreno has posted on social media about the cataract-removal operation he underwent on his right eye.  He said the rigors of the campaign [for the May 13 elections] have taken their toll on his eye which was exposed, more than necessary, to the heat of the sun, dust, and probably sweat and tears.

As we know, Mayor Moreno and Vice Mayor Kikang Uy had to do campaign sorties in two districts of the city. Unlike candidates for councilors and district representatives who campaigned only in one district, Mayor Moreno and VM Uy had to do both.

On the brighter side, the cataract removal operation will now enable Mayor Moreno to all the more clearly see the brighter future of Cagayan de Oro City and effectively lead it to its journey towards metropolization.

Mayor Moreno’s vision is always focused on the bigger picture. Get well soon, Mayor Oscar.

(Egay Uy is a lawyer. He chairs the City’s Regulatory and Complaint Board, co-chairs with the city mayor the City Price Coordinating Council, and chairs the city’s Joint Inspection Team.  He retired as a vice president of Cepalco.)
