WHAT should a dieter eat? In this age of animal rights, the empathetic dieter can be finally convinced to turn to whole grains, veggies and fruits. If that dieter can look at fishes without believing each of them is Nemo or Dory, then, he can add fish to that.

The one who diets without considering animal rights is not a cruel person—his appetite is simply diverse. He finds a live piggy cute but won’t think twice about feasting on lechon. To each his own.

A diet is like religion and politics. No one has the right to shove his ideals down anyone’s throat. Therefore, a carnivore has no right to shame a vegan for his food choices and vice versa. Respect has always been one of the values that keep this oh so cruel world afloat, and the same should be true for food choices. That’s why any large occasion has to consider the preferred menu of its guests, with at least one buffet table provided and properly identified as such for those who are into a noed-meat diet, which saves everyone from the trouble of asking the wait staff if a particular recipe has red meat or none. In this age of diversity and human rights, such a simple detail is now a must.

Red meat has had its share of bad press but the ketogenic diet has lifted it to a healthy status which I’m sure is still not enough to convince your doctor of the benefits of lechon, crispy pata, lechon kawali, chicharon, bistek Tagalog, bulalo and angus steak. Well, even for the diet, the question is, We can dream, can’t we?

Weight loss has always been a favorite New Year’s resolution. In case you haven’t noticed, June is almost over. And then, there’s July for the Fourth of July but that’s in the US unless your colonial mentality demands that you celebrate it here in Pinas, too. August will be fiesta time for Cagayan de Oro, after which the “ber” months will start with September and before you can blink, it’s Christmas season again and time to list down a new set of resolutions on New Year’s Eve.

Anyone with a manual planner can easily notice the days passing by as he’s now writing on the center pages of that planner while trying to remember what has happened during the first half of the year. Has he achieved his New Year’s resolutions? Or is that a work in progress? Hmmm. I have no problem whatsoever with resolutions since I didn’t make any.

So, how to compare Jan. 1, 2018 with the present if you started the year with no resolutions? That’s the question. Let’s calculate the ways, starting with the weight. So far, I have lost 6.8 pounds. That’s one pound per month. Oh my gosh. Asa na ang hustisya ani? Well, former Chief Justice Maria Lourdes Sereno is now vaguely hinting she’s running for something someday. If ever she’ll push through with her vague plans, the Election 2019 ballot may have not only her name but also that of Kris Aquino and Communications Assistant Secretary Mocha Uson. Their ploy could be to keep their fans guessing.

Longevity in politics is more attainable than longevity in showbiz. Showbiz relies on beauty, body weight and talent, once one of these three starts to change for the worse, the former star can then try politics, thanks to name recall and his loyal fans. Senate President Tito Sotto, however, doesn’t belong to this particular category of showbiz celebrity-turned-politician since he always managed to remain relevant in both careers. He didn’t have to retire at all from showbiz until he became Senate president since the higher position requires his utmost focus.

And then, there’s Senator Manny Pacquiao’s fight versus Lucas Matthysse in July. See? No need to give up the other career.

But then, Uson has stopped posting videos of, ahem, how to put on a condom.

Let’s see if Kris will say goodbye to her showbiz career and endorsements once she’s a senator. But can you even imagine her as a senator? Hmmm. For now, she constantly posts on social media, and the one for Friday last week included this line: “i will protect my people & my empire.” Wow. Empire gyud?

Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte may run for senator, too.

With all these famous names running next year, good luck na lang to the infamous.

Meanwhile, former Senator Bong Revilla posted a selfie while he was in his detention room. From privilege speeches to privileged detention. But the police confiscated his cellphone. Oh. No more privileges?

At least, a detainee still has the right to a healthy diet since food is a basic need. But has Revilla’s pork barrel scam case inspired him to avoid pork?
