I HEARD breaking wind is not allowed inside theaters that show “A Quiet Place.”

I’ve not been watching movies lately, preferring to venture out only when I absolutely have to like last Saturday to attend the “Essential Excel” seminar hosted by the Philippine Institute of Certified Public Accountants.

Sen. Sonny Trillanes had this bright idea to require professionals to earn Continuing Professional Development (CPD) units for their Professional Regulation Commission ID renewal, and CPAs have it worse, with 120 units required for now.

So, there I was on Saturday, my senior-moment minute brain grappling with Choose, Match, Sumif, Sumifs, If, Iferror, and where the @%$# is my Developer tab? I clicked Options and it wasn’t there. It was only at the end of the seminar when Developer was my only way to survive through the last workshop that I finally had the brains to Google this: “How to find Developer in Excel 2010.” And—voila! But it was too late. The resource speaker had finished sharing instructions by then, and I didn’t have the heart to ask, Sir, puede pakibalik tanan? It was already 5 pm. Time to go home.

And home is where I love to stay now most of the time, with the spring cleaning, reading, video games, staring at the trees, listening to chirping birds, and the bird that keeps banging its body on the window pane. Yes, staycation and cocooning have become my favorite spectator sports.

Bird? Banging? It’s not what you think. It’s a real bird, the one with feathers, not hair. I read somewhere that the reflection of sky and trees on glass windows makes them believe they’re flying to more sky and trees.

As for what you’re thinking, hmmm, wink wink!

Anyway, since I’ve not been to the movies, my sis told me all the spoiler alerts for “A Quiet Place” and “Rampage,” so, I guess the next movie worth watching is “Avengers: Infinity War.”

A movie block screening is one of the easiest ways to raise funds and any superhero or “Star Wars” film is always the best choice for selling more tickets. A political party should try this, to raise funds for campaign sorties. All it needs is a potential blockbuster. Plus sponsors who can give cash, water or food. And this latest “Avengers” of course has the highest potential.

People love action movies that leave them breathless as the lead character and his nemesis rush from one fight scene to another. If you’ve watched Keanu Reeves’ “John Wick” and “John Wick: Chapter 2,” then you now have a levelled-up standard for an action movie. That’s why videos of last week’s altercation between Camarines Sur Representatives Rolando Andaya Jr. and LRay Villafuerte became viral. Has that ever happened in Cagayan de Oro? Hmmm.

When there’s too much action, though, the one who has chosen a quiet life in a quiet place would rather watch nail polish dry. Can’t open a can of soda, can’t read a book, can’t run your fingers through his hair, no thanks to wet nail polish. Then, a week later, action begins as it peels off no matter how much it costs.

The hot and hotter seasons in Pinas are most appropriate for polished toenails that are best allowed to breathe in flipflops and sandals. It was raining some days last week, though—a pleasantly cool surprise but not for the body sensitive to sudden weather changes. Hot in the morning, raining in the afternoon—Asa ang hustisya ani? Well, busy impeaching Chief Justice Maria Lourdes Sereno—that’s what hustisya people seem to focus on.

Is this the People Power legacy? To remove anyone in power and replace them with one presumably better than the one shooed away? Like a dog—shoo! Or, buti pa ang dog, pini-pet; ang impeached, hindi. Tsk tsk. Pinas should be renamed as the Republic of Impeachment and Senate Hearings since I gotta feeling there will be more.

Cagayanons should congratulate Mayor Oscar Moreno for his resilience despite the perseverance of some people in trying to remove him from his post. But he’s brilliant—he has managed not only to stay but to continue implementing programs and projects for Cagayan de Oro. One made of lesser resolve and intelligence could have surrendered, but not Moreno. He keeps moving forward.

There’s also a lot of moving forward in “A Quiet Place” but with bare feet. Hush is a must when monsters with hypersensitive hearing are roaming around, which is good advice, too, in a noisy place populated by monsters in human form—keep your mouth shut, listen, and learn.
