The marine biologist, 58-year-old Lemuel Alfeche of Barangay Maanas, this town, complained of chest pains while he was on a boat just a few minutes right after diving.

Medina Mayor Donato  Chan said Alfeche was rushed to the hospital where he was declared dead on arrival. It was a cardiac arrest.

“His death is a big loss to us,” said an emotional Chan. “We lost our very own certified marine  biologist and a certified scuba diver.”

He said Alfeche was an excellent dive adviser, and a retired professor who was credited for his work and contribution on the Medina Marine Protected Area, a coral reefs restoration project, and transplanting at the town beach resort where he managed a shop for divers.
