President Aquino sent Police Director General Ricardo Marquez a text message that reads: “Congratulations and please pass the ‘job well done’ to all.”

Police said effective law enforcement was instrumental in the “all-time low” casualty record for the 2016 New Year’s celebrations.

The Palace also lauded Health Secretary Janette Garin after noting that the government recorded only 384 medical emergency cases related to the revelries.

Garin said the confiscations done by police “helped a lot.”

The government said the number of cases was 57 percent lower than the five-year average, and 53 percent lower than the recorded cases in 2015.

DOHun hospitals recorded nine amputations and noted “zero cases” of firecracker ingestion, Garin said.

But in Caraga, government records show that 45 people sustained firecracker injuries during the period of Dec. 23, 2015 to Jan. 1, 2016. Two of the victims required surgery and were confined in hospitals.

Most of the victims were children, aged five to 10 years, according to Romelyn Esther Torralba, DOH spokesperson for Caraga.

Torralba said 22 of the victims were children 10 years old and younger while 19 others had ages ranging from 11 to 20 years. Three were adults, 35 years and older. (ben serrano)
