ZAMBOANGA City––Abu Sayyaf extremists responsible for the abduction of two coast guards from Cagayan de Oro and Misamis Oriental, and a barangay chairman from Dapitan, executed one of the hostages they kidnapped nearly four months ago, a military official confirmed yesterday.

Brig. Gen. Alan Arrojado, Joint Task Group Sulu commander, said the decapitated remains of Rodolfo Boligao were found at around 9:45 pm Tuesday in Barangay Lunggang, Maimbung, Sulu.

Arrojado said Boligao’s remains were found with the written note “Rodolfo Boligao, barangay chairman of Aliguay Island, Dapitan City.”

The Abu Sayyaf snatched Boligao along with two members of the Coast Guard in May 4 in Aliguay, Dapitan City. The two Coast Guard personnel, identified as Seaman 1st Class Rod Pagaling of Carmen, Cagayan de Oro, and Seaman 2nd Class Gringo Villaruz of Tagoloan, Misamis Oriental, were detailed in Aliguay Island to keep an eye on motorboats ferrying tourists from and to the island.

Arrojado, quoting a police report, said the Abu Sayyaf executed Boligao “when the negotiator did not meet the amount of ransom demanded by the captors.”

There is no word yet on the fate of Pagaling and Villaruz. Arrojado said the remains of Boligao were taken to the provincial hospital, and was set to be brough to Dapitan City via this city through a Navy vessel. (pna)
