THE Roads and Traffic Administration is planning on implementing a new traffic plan around Carmen and Cogon markets that would affect jeepneys and other public utility vehicles, including motorelas and trisikads.
Engr. Nonito Oclarit of the RTA said presented part of the plan to the city council’s committee on roads and traffic management chaired by Councilor Romeo Calizo on Friday. It raised eyebrows especially from public transport sector leaders who attended the meeting.
Oclarit said the short-term plan would be ti implement a traffic scheme that would strictly regulate the movement and parking of hinterland-bound jeepneys, trucks and even motorelas and trisikads around the markets.
For Carmen market, he said new traffic signs were put in place in preparation for the implementation of the new scheme.
“We will reverse the traffic flow around Carmen market,” he said.
Oclarit said the RTA would also implement a strictly no-parking rule there.
He said the parking area for hinterland-bound jeepneys in Carmen would be moved to the terminal in Bulua.
“Sooner or later, we will also take out the trisikads plying on Villarin and Seriña streets,” said Oclarit, citing the complaints RTA has been receiving about how trisikads has been slowing down vehicular traffic on the two streets. The result, he said, is vehicular congestion in the main road.
Oclarit said a nearly similar traffic scheme would be implemented around Cogon market.
Ambulant vendors would be provided with relocation and would be allowed only from 9 pm to 3 am.
He said there would also be a traffic scheme there for jeepneys, and trisikads from and going to Nazareth and Camaman-an.
Oclarit said the RTA would also go strict on delivery trucks and vans, and proper parking rules would be imposed around Cogon market.
The Carmen and Cogon traffic schemes, according to Oclarit, are part of city hall’s comprehensive integrated traffic management plan.
But he said the RTA was open to the idea of incorporating other proposals in the plan.
“We are still accepting plans from other sectors. We can incorporate their plans,” Oclarit said.
