BUTUAN City––A local thunderstorm spawned strong winds that damaged houses and at least 10 classrooms in Barangay Linertad, this city, on Monday afternoon. No one was reported hurt.

Libertad Central Elementary School had to suspend its classes yesterday because classrooms needed immediate repairs, said principal Nenita Diolata.

She said initial damage estimates were placed at P1 million.

“Ten classrooms were damaged and lost their roofs, old trees were uprooted, and at least 200 pupils and teachers will undergo stress debriefing,” said Diolata, adding that students and teachers were traumatized.

City hall’s disaster quick response team said they were still assessing damages because the winds also caused damages outside the school.

A structure at a gas station in Libertad was also toppled down.

The state weather bureau said the local thunderstorm brought the strong winds. The bureau however said there was no big weather system in its radar.
