Cuevas said Kinawe chairman Tarcisio Barros pointed to Datu as the one who ambushed him and his daughter Hope Barros, 14, last Saturday at 5:15 pm.

The younger Barros, who was hit in the head with a bullet from an M16 rifle, was declared dead on arrival at the Maria Reyna Hospital, this city.

Cuevas said Datu surrendered to the authorities so he could clear his name.

“Ingon siya (Datu) wala man kunoy iyang kalambigitan sa pag-ambush sa anak ug amahan,”  h said.

Cuevas added that although Datu denied the allegation, they still have to detain him because of Barros, who survived the ambush, identified him as the one who waylaid them on Saturday afternoon.

Barros and his daughter, Cuevas said, were on their way home to Zone 2, Kinawe in Libona town aboard their jeep at about 5:15 pm on Saturday.

Upon reaching a blind curve in Zone 7, gunmen strafed the vehicle.

Cuevas said Barros told him he suspected Datu to be behind the ambush because his wife and Datu had argued two months ago over rightful ownership of a piece of land in Kinawe. (nitz arancon)
