ACTIVISTS from across the island have started gathering here since yesterday to protest against the implementation of the Enhanced Defense Cooperation Agreement (Edca) that would, among others, turn the Lumbia Airport into a place for a US military facility.

The series of activities started at the Lapasan covered court last night.

Organizers expect some 5,000 participants during the protest actions here that would culminate with a rally this afternoon.

Their participants are coming from South Cotabato, Sultan Kudarat, Saranggani, General Santos City, Davao City, Caraga, and West Mindanao.

“We would gain inspiration from this event as we advance our strong condemnation of the installation of US military base in Lumbia Airport,” reads part of the organizers’ press advisory.

The protest actions coincide with the 116th anniversary of Battle of Makahambus hill where local revolutionary heroes led by Col. Apolinar Velez won over the American aggressors during the Philippine-American War in 1900.
