A GROUP of communication students from Xavier University are starting a campaign called “I am Mindanao” against violent extremism in the country’s second largest island.

Brian Adam Anay, project leader, said the group is composed of 4th year Development Communication (Devcom) students who decided to start the campaign that aspires to encourage their peers to counter violent extremism in Mindanao.

The campaign, he said, would be social media-based.

Anay said the I am Mindanao campaign is a counter-extremism initiative which endeavors to educate college students in Cagayan de Oro about violent extremism in Mindanao, strengthen their sense of pride as Mindanawons, and empower them to take part in countering violent extremism.

Apart from a young leaders’ camp which took place last week, the counter-extremism campaign would implement a mall exhibit, university television program, university seminars, freedom walls, active social media promotions, and engaging projects for Mindanawons to pave the way for a unified and peaceful Mindanao.
