Energy firm STEAG State Power Inc. (SPI) hosted barangay leaders of Sta. Cruz in Tagoloan, Misamis Oriental in a one-day seminar workshop and action planning on solid waste management. The activity provided the mechanism to discuss, identify, and agree on doable community-based solutions to address the growing concern on garbage. A DENR report said that on the average, a Filipino living in an urban area generates about 0.6kgs of solid wastes daily. Furthermore, a World Bank study reported that the volume of municipal wastes generated in urban areas is projected to grow by 177% in 2025, thereby posing severe health risks and environmental problems if not adequately addressed.
