Sixty-year-old William Jamero Maraon of Natumolan, Tagoloan, was pronounced dead on arrival at the St. Paul Hospital at around 6:35 pm.

Maj. Rogelio Manalang, Tagoloan police chief, said Maraon had spent a day in detention at the Tagoloan police station; he was arrested Wednesday and charged with raping a child before the Provincial Prosecutor’s Office on Thursday.

Maraon had strongly denied raping the girl.

The girl’s father said it was his daughter who provided details about the alleged sexual abuse. He said his daughter was traumatized.

He said Maraon had abused his daughter twice in a day inside the suspect’s house.

Results of a medical examination show the child had lacerations in her genitalia.

Manalang said Maraon was found “unconscious” inside a detention cell at around 6:25 pm by M/Sgt. Melvin Woodrow Lu-ang.

The body was hanging near a concrete wall with pieces of his shirt used as a rope tied to a steel bar.

Manalang theorized that Maraon had been depressed.“Baka di niya matanggap na preso na siya at grabe siguro ang hiya niya sa kanyang mga kapitbahay kaya yan, nag-suicide na lang siya,” Manalang said.
