“GENERATE synergy in achieving our shared goal in mental health,” Councilor Maria Lourdes Gaane pointed out during her special report at this week’s regular session.

The councilor, who chairs the City Council committee on health and health insurance, reported about her  travel to Kaohsiung, Taiwan last Nov. 12-16.

Gaane said the conference focused on sharing of experiences in mental health care in five countries – Taiwan, Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia, and Philippines.

She reported that there are four mental health facilities in Taiwan, one of which is the Tsaotsun Psychiatric Center, the only public mental hospital that provides long-term care for the disadvantaged psychotic patients without family support.

Gaane expressed disappointment that mental health care situation in Cagayan de Oro is not active compared to Taiwan.

“NMMC has 600 beds and JR Borja General Hospital has 200, but no psychiatric beds… nine private hospitals in our city do not have any psychiatric beds, only the House of Hope,” she said. (sp)
