A mother and daughter duo found a way to make their self-imposed quarantine productive by sewing homemade cloth face mask to be given to family, friends and those who are having trouble in purchasing their own surgical mask from pharmacies in Cagayan de Oro.

Niña “Tetet” Abonitalla a handicraft maker and owner of Crafty Ninz, and her daughter Julia Christy a senior high student of Xavier University- Senior High School found a way to pass the time by making their own cloth face mask for themselves. Later on, Niña learned that a well-known gown designer in the city Alma Mae Roa of Cameron, was giving away free fabrics to frontliners or anyone who knows how to make, and sew their own, and in return, she hopes they would return the favour by giving the finish products to frontliners or people they know for free.

And in her own way help provide frontliners and people with masks during this time of need through collaborating with other people who like herself, care about the welfare of healthcare workers who are on the frontline – especially when the supplies such as face mask are scarce in the city due to the global pandemic brought about by the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) that’s affecting people worldwide.

For their part, after receiving the materials Niña and Julia began work in producing masks to be given for free to those who have none. Julia was in charge of drawing the sketch or “tracing” of the masks while her mother sews the mask.

Their goal is to make as many mask possible using the fabric given to them by Alma and give it to her love ones and those who need it. As of this writing they are still sewing DIY face masks and have already made over 40 and ready to be given away.
