THE head of a group managing the city government’s isolation facilities yesterday appealed to the public not to subject people who were quarantined to unfair treatment.

Rhyselle Melliza-Descallar, the manager of the City Isolation Unit, said this even she took note of situations when people who were placed in quarantine for two weeks were discriminated in the city. She said even the isolation unit front-liners were being ill-treated.

Descallar became emotional during a press conference as she narrated how some residents unfairly treated those who spent 14 days alone in the city’s isolation facilities.

She said people in communities should not even see the isolation units in their midst as a threat to public health.

“We did not come to battle unprepared. All of our staff are well-trained,” Descallar said even as she stressed that her group has been strictly following quarantine protocols.

Descallar said the unfair treatment of a quarantined person will likely impact on his or her mental health, pointing out that spending 14 days in a room alone was already enough to take a toll on that individual.

Descallar lauded the front-liners in the isolation facilities for taking risks in the campaign to keep Covid-19 from spreading further in the city.

As of yesterday, Descallar’s group has been taking care of 71 people placed under quarantine in four city isolation units.

Those quarantined are being given medical and mental health intervention services. The government is also shouldering the costs of providing them with food, medicine, and toiletries, among others. (Spencer Palen of CIO)
