A WHIRLWIND whipped Tudela, Misamis Occidental, yesterday afternoon, damaged 64 houses, hurt seven people, caused hours of power outage, and momentarily rendered roads impassable due to uprooted trees and debris.

Capt. Roland Donor, chief of Tudela police station, said the twister badly hit barangay Basirang, where roofs of houses were ripped off and makeshift structures were flattened to the ground.

“Those hurt were hit by trees or branches that fell on their houses,” said Donor, adding that aside from Basirang, the villages of Sebac, Upper Centro, and Centro Napu villages were also in the whirlwind’s path.

He said that it was raining when the rare phenomenon occurred.

“Power supply may have been cut off (deliberately) to prevent electrocution,” the town’s police chief said. As of 11 p.m. last night, power has been restored in barangay Sebac, six hours after the outage.

Gov. Philip Tan, who was in the affected areas for road clearing of obstructions late yesterday afternoon, has directed Tudela mayor Samuel Parojinog to submit a damage assessment report today.
