A P14-MILLION-PESO food terminal complex is being eyed in northern Mindanao to eliminate participation of middlemen, a press statement said Monday.
It said, through the years, the gap between the farmers and the consumers in the region has widened because of traders and middlemen.
Northern Mindanao agriculture department regional executive director Carlene Collado with technical working group on Thursday met Talakag, Bukidnon town mayor Mayor Vergito O. Factura to discuss the project.
The department eyed to have the food terminal to be established and operational by 2021.
Farmers can sell their products directly to the consumers with the establishment of the regionwide Talakag food center and terminal.
Collado said it aims to improve the marketing system of the farmers especially in upland municipalities like the Talakag town of the region.
“This is to ensure food security and boost farmers’ income,” said Collado as he discussed with Factura on September 24.
Collado said, the food terminal will be constructed in Miarayon, Talakag, Bukidnon, that will benefit local farmers, traders and residents of the municipalities along with its nearby towns, cities and provinces.
Talakag agriculturist Liezl V. Barros said this will significantly increase the profit of local farmers.
“The establishment of the food terminal eliminates the participation of middlemen,” said Barros.
Meanwhile, DA-RFO 10 agribusiness and marketing assistance division chief Chedy Ansale said Talakag has a potential production area of around 11 thousand hectares and is known for producing high value vegetables such as white potato, carrots, cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower, lettuce and coffee.
