A financier of online cockfighting and four of its cashiers were arrested by policemen during a raid conducted by elements of the Cagayan de Oro City City Police Office last Saturday.
Cocpo Director Aaron Mandia dientified the suspects as Noel Esmilla, 44, a resident of Tagum, Davao City; Domingo Tordillo, 18, single, Jenny Galua, 20, single; Monalisa Calamba, 27, single; and Arcelie Olaybar, 19, single, all of them came from Surigao del Norte.
Esmilla, according to police, is the financier of the said illegal activity. While Tordillo, Galua, Calamba, and Olaybar are the cashiers.
Mandia said the group was apprehended by personnel of police station 3 in Agora led by Police Lt. Macario Linog, Jr. while at Valenzuela road, Agora, Barangay Lapasan at about 12 noon.
It was learned, an informant tipped off Agora police regarding several personalities catering to online cockfighting operations with physical betting from the audience.
Mandia said it was considered illegal gambling because it has no permit from the concerned government agencies.
During the raid, three bettors were able to escape and evaded the arrest.
A brief commotion occurred when a mentally deranged person went wild but was later overpowered by authorities.
Policemen were able to seize pieces of evidence in the area such as a yellow ledger notebook containing betting records, betting money in different denominations totaling P3,880, and a black Sharp 72 inches TV.
Suspects are now in the PS3 custodial facility while a case of illegal gambling under Presidential Decree 1602 is being prepared for filing.
E-Sabong is defined as the online/remote or off-site wagering/betting on live cockfighting matches, events, and/or activities streamed or broadcasted live from cockpit arena/s licensed or authorized by the local government units.
