THREE new Covid-19 deaths were reported in just two days here in Cagayan de Oro as cases continue to climb this week with authorities here imposing stricter health protocols.

Mayor Rolando Uy directed owners of local malls, restaurants, and business establishments to start a renewed campaign of inspecting anew the vaccination cards of their customers.

Uy, who was widely criticized for skipping a Covid-19 press event to entertain a delegation of Miss Cagayan de Oro 2020 beauty contestants, said he met with city health officials this week to assess the uptick of coronavirus cases in the city.

“I learned about how Kagay-anons have become complacent to the minimum health protocols,” Uy said.

Uy said he would issue an executive order next week directing owners of local malls, restaurants, and business establishments to inspect anew the vaccination cards of their customers.

The City Health Office reported three Covid-19 deaths on July 19 and July 21. One death was reported on July 19 and two deaths on July 21.

These bring the number of deaths because of the coronavirus to 944 inching closer to the 1,000-mark.

The CHO also reported that there were 56 active cases recorded on July 21.

City Health Officer Dr. Rachel Dilla said earlier this week, that she would recommend that all participants of the events leading to the city fiesta on August 28, be fully inoculated.

In its July 15 report, the CHO reported 581,439 residents have been inoculated or 96.14 percent of the city’s target population of 604,953 to attain herd immunity; and 555,972 residents, or 91.90 percent were given their second dose.

Dr. Ina Grace Chiu, who heads the CHO’s Covid-19 vaccination team said the city lags in administering booster shots, and only 147,555 residents have taken their booster shots.
